Weekly update 1-29-17

We were privileged today to witness part of Susan Stein’s one-woman play and audience dialogue based on the diaries and letters of Esther “Etty” Hillesum, a 29 year-old Dutch Jewish woman who lived and perished during the Holocaust. Our students were enthralled.  If you’d like to read more about her play, go to www.ettyplay.org. Many thanks to Temple Shalom for inviting her to Louisville.

Next week we’ll be enjoying a slightly expanded lunch period so we can hear from Jewish journalist, Uriel Heilman. A 10-time Rockower Award winner, Mr. Heilman has served as JTA’s managing editor, senior US national correspondent, and news editor; worked for the Jerusalem Post as New York bureau chief, an Israel reporter and a magazine writer; and was a staffer for the Forward as a city reporter. Thanks go out to Keneseth Israel for bringing Mr. Heilman to Louisville.

Huge thanks to the families who let me know with plenty of time about your children’s absence today.  You may not realize what a difference the notification makes: we had one class with no students, even though we were expecting several to be there—I’m sure you can imagine how frustrating that was for the teacher who prepared an exciting lesson for today.
